  • Everything we find in our external or internal terrain belongs to one of the Five Elements, each of which has supporting and controlling relationships with the other elements. When the Five Elements – within our bodies or external environments – are balanced, we experience health and prosperity. When they’re out of balance – overacting, counteracting, or failing to properly support one another – we experience dis-ease of one sort or another.

On the theory of the Five Elements, the elements are Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood and are represented by the five massive organs, which are Heart, Spleen, Lungs, Kidney and Liver, respectively. Each element provides the energy for the formation and maintenance of the next element. This process is entitled generation cycle: Kidneys to Liver to Heart to Stomach to Lungs, then back to Kidneys again. In this theory, all organs are interconnected, and everything that happens with an organ on the energy level will influence the other organs and the whole system.

Any system cycles through these phases. In the body, there is a specific organ network with responsibility for managing each phase. The term “Organ network” is used here to describe an energy system in the body. Each organ network has at least two key physical organs associated with it, and energy channels through the body (these channels are the ones used in acupuncture, and are named after the organs they are associated with). Each organ network generates, on the “emotional level” the emotional quality associated with that phase. Here are the Five Organ networks and the qualities they generate when healthy:

    • Wood: Liver/Gall bladder organ network – A Balanced Assertiveness/Kindness
    • Fire: Heart/Small Intestine organ network – Loving Joyfulness
    • Earth: Stomach/Spleen organ network – Openness to others
    • Metal: Lungs/Large Intestines organ network – An ordered discrimination/righteousness
    • Water: Kidneys/Bladder organ network – Careful gentleness

Problems in a particular organ network will affect not only the key organs, but other body areas connected to its energy channels. Difficulty in an organ network results in emotional, cognitive (thinking) and social responses as well as physical symptoms. Problems in a network are of two main kinds: excesses and deficiencies of the energy needed to do that system’s job. An excess of energy in the fire (heart/small intestines) network might cause not only an overstrong erratic heartbeat, but also an overexcitability or even manic euphoria. A deficiency of energy in that network might cause not only a weak slow pulse, but also an anxious emotional fragility.

    • Liver Health: According to traditional Chinese medicine, the Liver is the organ that is most affected by excess stress or emotions. Feel it, express it, but don’t hold it! Are you often irritable? Do things stress you out easily? Your Liver is telling you that its function is becoming out of balance.

    • Heart Health: True cardiovascular health is not just about physical fitness, it’s about deep contentment with one’s life and destiny.  Happiness and love are often associated with the Heart representing a state of peacefulness. Stress or lack of self-expression can directly impact this organ’s function.

    • Stomach Health: Chronic stress, worry, and anxiety can damage Stomach function very quickly. Without the proper functioning of the Stomach and its partner organ the Spleen, you can easily begin to suffer from poor digestive health and low metabolism function.

    • Lungs Health: Too much sadness and grieving can harm the Lung and its partner, the Large Intestine. “Letting things go” is a healthy way to stimulate your Lung’s function and get rid of physical and emotional baggage.

    • Kidneys Health: The Kidney is the “reserve generator” of energy in the body, supplying extra Qi to all the organs when necessary. Its corresponding emotion of fear can be a red flag that these powerhouses of the body are themselves low on Qi and working too hard.
